My parents moved our family to the inner west of Sydney from country Victoria in the early 1960's when my brother, my sister and I were very young. My father taught industrial arts at Trinity Grammar School and Mum worked as assistant to the chairman of the Australian Board of Missions. At home Mum was artistic and played piano and Dad was always making things... from candles to canoes. I guess there was no escaping the creative gene. I loved to draw and my parents' encouragement really helped me to feel that I was quite good at it.

I now call Queensland home and work as a cinemagrahpic make-up artist / hairstylist specialising in airbrush make-up (which I also teach). I've worked in television and short film, and my work has graced the covers of national and international magazines.

I've always adored the art of make-up and I guess it wasn't really such a huge leap swapping the make-up brushes for art brushes when a friend gave me a set of oils and a few brushes about four years ago as a Christmas present.   She knew that I didn't paint but obviously wanted to share her passion for all things art.

Having had no formal training in art I thought the best way to begin was simply to begin.   I painted for a couple of years, experimenting with styles, figuring out techniques but I got to the point where I knew I needed tuition. I wanted to know theory, colour and light and I'm sure my teacher would tell you that I was ravenous for any information I could sink my teeth into. I love to paint. I can't wait to get out of bed in the morning to paint and my only regret is that I didn't listen to my mum years ago when she suggested I pick up a brush.

What I enjoy most is trying to capture a mood with my art. I’d have to say that painting portraits is my favourite subject and I feel that my background as a make-up artist has been an enormous help, not only in understanding the structure of a face and skin tones but   by the fact that people tend to ‘open up’ with their make-up artist, just as they do   with their hairdresser so you can imagine the stories I've heard.   I’ve worked on people from all walks of life and have heard many very personal stories that I might not have heard otherwise. I always find that a privilege. When I paint a portrait I aim to present the sitter's personality on canvas.
I hope you enjoy my work.

regards
